LEARNING – THE MEANING OF HUMAN LIFE
N.V. SUBRAMANIAN
Correspondent ,
Sitadevi Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya,
East tambaram, Chennai 59

It is common knowledge that as the earth became hospitable for supporting life, many life forms evolved which even today defies enumeration and classification . Of all such forms the arrival of human specifies has particular significance. Whereas all other species merely exist, human being by its own intelligence has learnt the art of living. This difference is due to the endowed gift of intelligence and the application of the same. Using intelligence, the human being observed, studied and understood the surroundings, natural elements, the other specifies of life, the celestial behaviour and ultimately its own meaning for existence. This learning , understanding and assimilation of both matter and the mind is mainly due to superior intelligence in some of the human beings. Apart from the intellectuals like Aryabhatta, Varahamihira, Danvanthri, etc., we have famous names of the immediate past like Newton , Einstein, C.V. Raman, Jagdish Chandra Bose, Columbus, Ramanujam, Vascoda Gama, Magellan, Madame Curie etc. We have with us eminent personalities like Abdul Kalam, Amritya Sen. On the spiritual side we had the advent of Adi Sankara, Ramanuja, Madhavachariar and other great saints. This list is vast and continuing . Mankind has benefitted considerably by the contribution of such personalities to the growth of knowledge. It is strange but true that the history of knowledge world has been punctuated by intellectuals.

As the knowledge grew and as the population increased, the minuscule system of learning had to be buttressed by evolved system of education. This led to the introduction of teaching institutions – both basic and higher aspects. Settled knowledge had to be classified and compartmentalised into various subjects for ease of learning. This imparting had to be step by step , making periodical changes for eschewing the redundant and introducing the fresh frontiers.

It should be remembered however that the new frontiers are made possible only because of the continuation of the self learning process. Human being cannot by nature stop this quest as what has to be learnt is still incomprehensibly so vast compared to the knowledge already acquired.

What do we learn from all this? The education in the school and latter in the college is only the digested knowledge of the past. They are stepping stones for future thinking and not an end by themselves except for ordinary living. Every student should have the urge to continue the learning process and where possible to contribute to the growth of knowledge. In particular, we have to fast learn to live with nature. Learning about the unknown after all should be the ultimate aim of education.
